Brief History of Starbase 719
In 2382, Starfleet
Command decided to establish a permanent presence in the Typhon Sector.
Upon approval of the Federation Council, the Starfleet Corps of
Engineers started construction on a Spacedock-type
starbase located in deep space along the
Federation border only light years from the Typhon
Expanse.
Construction took
several years to complete, hampered by the Kairn
invasion only one sector away before Starfleet pushed the Kairn Empire back beyond their original border on stardate 59739.
As the starbase neared completion in 2385,
Starfleet made plans to reactivate the Fifth Fleet, which had earned its
reputation during Operation Return - the battle to recapture starbase Deep
Space Nine - and been deactivated at the end of the Dominion War, as a
fleet of exploration to be based at the new starbase.
In mid-2385, Starbase 719 was turned over to the command
of Rear Admiral Val’ri Raiajh,
first commanding officer of the USS
Besiege during the early months of the Dominion War. Raiajh
immediately traveled out to the Typhon Sector to
oversee the final stages of construction and arrival of the permanently
assigned crew. Then, following a
final briefing at Starfleet Command in the first week of 2386, Admiral Raiajh returned to Starbase 719 to commission the facility and assume overall command of
the sector.
