Brief History of the USS Triton

The starship Triton, Starfleet registry NCC-80106, is a Luna-class explorer launched in the year 2380, making Triton the youngest vessel in the Fifth Fleet.  It is the seventh Luna-class starship built and the third Federation starship to bear the name.

Triton was built at the Utopia Planitia Fleetyard orbiting Mars and was launched on stardate 57465.0 under the command of Captain Ned Sand.  After a brief shakedown, the Triton was assigned to Starfleet's Small Magellanic Cloud exploratory expedition alongside the USS Prometheus and the USS Europa.

Triton completed her extra-galactic mission in 2385 and returned to Utopia Planitia for post-mission refit and upgrades. In early 2386, command of Triton was turned over to Captain Charlie Momsen and the Triton was reassigned to the newly reformed Federation Fifth Fleet, assigned to Starbase 719 in the Typhon Sector. The vessel’s new mission had barely begun when the ship fell under attack and Captain Momsen was killed.  Triton returned to Starbase 719, where Captain Amanda Tomkins assumed command of the starship and resumed its mission to explore the unknown.

The starship’s nickname, ‘Duranium Raider,’ follows a tradition that goes back to the mid-20th century when the American nuclear submarine USS Triton (SSN-586), the first to circumnavigate the Earth submerged, earned the nickname of the ‘Steel Raider.’
